About MB House

A Visionary Expansion in the Valtellina Mountains

Nestled in the scenic embrace of the Valtellina mountains, this project breathes new life into a detached house. It perches elegantly on the western bank of a gentle stream, with terraced vineyards ascending to the north and west. Moreover, the home commands a stunning view over the valley and the majestic Orobian Alps.

The renovation unfolds in two main parts. The first, a cozy haven comprising a bedroom and bathroom, spans 645 sq ft (59.92 sq m) over two levels, tucked neatly behind the existing structure. Here, designers opted for thermally treated ash wood for the walls, while the floors and shower glisten with softly brushed light marble.

Subsequently, the second expansion, sprawling over 2,150 sq ft (199.74 sq m), is designed as the home’s social core. It houses a kitchen, pantry, bathroom, dining, living area, and, not least, a serene swimming pool.

Fusing Natural Elegance with Architectural Ingenuity

Characterized by its flat, verdant roofs and natural stone facade, this section opens generously to the valley with two large windows. The design concept, rooted in harmony with the site’s history, aims to dissolve as much of the new volume as possible into the landscape. Consequently, a substantial rock excavation was undertaken to restore the original terrace sections, integrating them into the surrounding terrain.

For the kitchen and bathroom floors, and the pool’s lining, the choice fell on absolute black granite, its sandblasted and brushed texture exuding understated luxury. Likewise, thermally treated ash wood flooring in the living spaces and adjacent to the pool fosters a tangible continuity between indoors and out.

Crafting Cohesion Between Interior and Landscape

The project also prioritizes a seamless flow between the home and its natural surroundings. Windows built with precision and featuring slender profiles, despite their size, ensure a flood of natural light while maintaining a sleek look. This thoughtful approach to the windows not only strengthens the connection with the outdoors but also celebrates the unspoiled views, effectively erasing the line between the built and natural environment.
