Modern Oasis of Sensual Minimalism by Alta Idea Design Studio

Modern Oasis of Sensual Minimalism is an apartment in Kyiv, Ukraine, designed by Alta Idea Design Studio. Completed in 2023, the interior features a sleek layout incorporating decorative, tactile and technological elements to provide a couple with a peaceful, harmonious home.

Open-Plan Layout

The modern apartment introduces a feminine and minimalist interior for its clients, a married couple who wanted a peaceful retreat from city life. Designed by local practice Alta Idea Design Studio, the interior boasts a sleek, open-plan layout prioritising function.

The layout includes an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area, a primary bedroom, a children’s bedroom, two bathrooms and a dressing room with a concealed washer and dryer. As stated by studio lead designer Anastasiia Mateiko, the goal of the interior was to create a comforting feel: “The objective of the clients was to create a peaceful retreat where they could relax and find harmony.”

Mateiko adds that the apartment initially comprised a shell space without any partitions, giving the team flexibility to construct the interior from scratch. In approaching the layout, Alta Idea Design Studio gave special consideration to lighting, technology and acoustics, with sound systems installed throughout the home. “The high ceilings allowed for the installation of a concealed cinema screen in the living room, as well as additional spotlights and speakers,” says Mateiko. The designer explains further that each room’s sound system offers personalised playlists and features smart home technology to maintain ease of use.

Tactile Minimalism

The apartment features a natural colour scheme accented with the client’s favourite shade, terracotta. “In this project, we started with a clean slate – an open space without walls or partitions,” says Mateiko.

As a decorative feature, the design incorporates fabric wall panels in both the living room and the bedroom, which provide a soft, tactile quality while also cleverly disguising storage features. “In the living room and bedroom, the panels conceal storage spaces and are pleasant to the touch,” explains Mateiko, adding that the apartment’s main bathroom is similarly decorated with acoustic panels that add texture to the dark-toned space.

Contrasting Colour Accents

Contrasting with the relative neutrality of the living spaces, the design uses strong terracotta hues as an accent, particularly in the hallway and a bathroom. According to Mateiko, the apartment’s main bathroom is minimalist, calm and “tuned to relaxation”. “The shower room and hallway become a bold contrast to the general interior. Bright terracotta tones give energy and positivity,” Mateiko adds. “The rooms with sound systems allow personalised playlists and features of a smart home for easy management.”
