Fishermen’s House B-10 Reflects on Spanish Modernist History

Fishermen’s House B-10, designed by Marco de Gregorio in 2021, is an historic terraced house located in Spain. It’s part of a small settlement built for fishermen and their families in the late 1950s, designed by Spanish modernist architect José Antonio Coderch y de Sentmenat in an andalusian style.

The renovation preserves the original layout with a simplified design using simple and durable materials inside and out, retaining features like the whitewashed facades and red clay tiled roofs.

The settlement was designed by Spanish modernist architect José Antonio Coderch y de Sentmenat, known for his work in an Andalucian style. The area features whitewashed facades, entrance patios, gardens, and red clay tiles on the roof.

Every house has a unique expression, yet all share the layout of a front patio and a larger private courtyard or garden at the back.

Faithful Renovation

With the renovation of this house, it was imperative to be faithful to the original intentions, using simple and durable materials both inside and out.

De Gregorio preserved the original layout but simplified it by creating one large kitchen, dining, sitting, and work space opening onto the south-facing private courtyard.

The bedrooms and an enlarged bathroom were retained towards the street and entrance courtyard. To enhance visual connection and functional interaction, extra doors were added so no rooms are enclosed.

In the private courtyard, various sitting and relaxing areas were created, surrounding the fountain pool, offering a sense of tranquility and connection with the outdoors.
