M/W House by Spacein
M/W House by Spacein was created on an irregularly shaped plot in Riga, Latvia. Designed in 2024, the wooden-clad home encompasses three volumes, with decomposition into smaller units designed to distance from the adjacent plots and follow the site’s boundaries.

Wooden House Design
M/W House was designed by spacein on a small plot in Riga, Latvia. The architecture firm aimed to create a home that navigates the boundaries between private and public spaces, blending Baltic and Nordic design influences.
Set on a 640 square meter (6,900 square foot) plot, the house’s specific shape pushed the limits of conventional architecture. The design features a timber structure, reflecting Latvia’s tradition of wooden construction.

According to the architects, the house encourages the creation of close-knit insular communities that find comfort when distanced from surroundings. However, it also embodies the Nordic ethos of blending indoor and outdoor spaces. They further note that this home encapsulates the notion of merging Baltic and Nordic styles with contemporary urban living, offering both privacy and connectivity to its residents.

The house comprises three volumes that follow site boundaries, zoning codes and functionality concerns. The home appears calm and minimal from the street, with a charcoal wooden facade, but reveals a cozy and warm interior upon entry. Positioned on the plot, the house creates its own courtyards facing the valuable elements of the surrounding landscape. They double as functional extensions of the living room spaces.

A significant feature of the home’s interior is a large V-shaped window. The eight meter (26 foot) long window visually connects interior and exterior spaces.
This building is unique as it can see itself from its own windows. The volumes are arranged so varying levels of privacy are ensured for its individual rooms.

Environmental Efficiency
Facades feature wooden nails, enhancing the structure’s recyclability. The owners, who are outdoor enthusiasts, sought a home that reflected their commitment to an active and sustainable lifestyle.

To protect the roots of nearby trees, the house rests on several dozens of micropiles that minimize soil disruption and maximize structural support. The building is also highly energy efficient because of heat recovery systems as well as thick thermal insulation, well-executed construction and clever orientation.

Founded in Riga, Latvia, spacein is a studio that values high-quality residential design. The architectural team regards “space for architecture the same as play for theatre.” They define space as a dynamic entity heavily dependent on activity and purpose.
