Les Mont-Rogenques by Estudi Biga Evokes Nostalgia with Garden Views
Located in Barcelona, Spain, Les Mont-Rogenques is an apartment designed by Estudi Biga in 2020. The project aims to revive the essence of a bygone way of life in the Farró neighborhood, characterized by gardens and communal living. Featuring a flexible network of rooms, the interiors are designed to be adaptable and highlight textures, colors, and light, recovered from the house’s historical layers.

Flexible Living Spaces
Les Mont-Rogenques, a residential project by Estudi Biga in Barcelona, embraces the local history and character of the Farró neighbourhood. The project emphasises a return to lost essences of daily life, with a flexible network of rooms that offer various ways of living.

This design flexibility is not about creating a museum-like space; instead, it provides adaptable spaces without predetermined or hierarchical uses. Each room has its distinct idiosyncrasy, influenced by textures, colours, and light, alongside newly discovered elements from the house’s historical layers. There is a harmonious coexistence of these elements, old and new.

Connection to Tradition
The project’s name, “Mont-Rogenques”, suggests a deep connection to local culture and history, echoing the lines of Mercè Rodoreda, who portrayed life in this area. Surrounded by small gardens with fig and pomegranate trees, the design encompasses rooftops with terracotta tiles, dining rooms with iron lamps full of flowers, and traditional railings adorned with geraniums.

The description of a glass door with multi-coloured glass panels that leads to a back garden paints a vivid image of charming houses where neighbourly relationships were much like those of a large family. This nostalgic homage to past lifestyles adds layers of meaning and value to the overall design of Les Mont-Rogenques.

Reviving a Bygone Era
The design concept of Estudi Biga does not merely aim to create visual appeal but to instil a sense of life and authenticity related to the area’s historical context. It aims to recover what has been lost in a rapidly changing urban environment. The flexible spaces reflect a return to daily life and the genuine emotions connected to living in such a community.

This approach challenges conventional norms, creating a residence that resonates with people’s memories and their everyday experiences. In doing so, Les Mont-Rogenques raises questions about modernity and the rich layers of history that can be re-discovered and cherished.
