Prague-based studio Markéta Bromová Architekti has completed the interior of the Mezi Srnky bistro in Prague, Czech Republic. Designed in 2024, the bistro sits within a late 19th-century apartment building in the Vinohrady district. The team focused on durable materials such as terrazzo and textured plaster to create a lively, functional atmosphere. The color palette includes playful details and tactile finishes, providing a visual balance between raw and refined elements for an elegant dining experience.
Located in a recently renovated apartment building with a historicist facade dating back to the late 19th century, the Mezi Srnky Bistro finds its home near Náměstí Míru in Prague’s Vinohrady district. The space occupies the ground floor of the building, with two additional rooms in the basement intended for future renovation.
The design of the interior began with a focus on the durability of the materials. A terrazzo floor serves as the foundation of the entire concept, setting the direction for the bistro’s design with its aesthetics and functionality. The choice of terrazzo tiles, vital for a high-traffic area, ensures it meets the highest durability standards. Narrow strips or whole tiles of various types of marble interspersed in the grid create a playful, interesting pattern on the floor. This design retains harmony and elegance despite the contrasting materials, adding a sophisticated and dynamic style to the space.
The bistro comprises two interconnected rooms, each possessing its own specific character. The large, open, and airy front part evokes a lively atmosphere, while the more intimate rear part provides a quieter environment for those seeking seclusion. Moving from the front to the back, glimpses of the kitchen, which connects to the rear room, can be seen. Adjacent to the rear room lies a staircase leading to the restrooms.
The wall finishes in the bistro exhibit a combination of rough textured plaster and smooth paint. In the front part, the rough textured plaster starts above the bench seating and ends just below the ceiling molding, subtly segmenting the visual height of the space. The rear room, on the other hand, is dominated by a reddish-brown (chestnut) colour wall that integrates with the bench on one side and connects to the staircase and restrooms on the other.
Simplified and more uniform surfaces characterise the staircase, landings, and intermediate landings in contrast to the rest of the bistro. The design aimed to preserve the raw character of the concrete staircase discovered during an initial inspection of an unfinished restaurant originally planned by the owner. This reddish-brown shade permeates the entire bistro interior, appearing upon entry in the form of a large shelving unit filled with mugs, coffee, and plants, on the chairs, in the marble accents within the terrazzo floor, and on the rear room’s wall separating the staircase from the seating. The material of the staircase’s floor extends into the restrooms, creating a visual link between the raw elements of the staircase and the restroom interiors.
The pink concrete bar island stands out as a subtle jewel in the interior. Designed to add a feminine touch to the space, the sharp edges of the island give it a firm presence, allowing it to capture visual attention without overpowering the rest of the interior. Materially, the bar island provides a counterpoint to the terrazzo floor, sparking an intriguing dialogue between these elements. The concrete’s delicate pink hue adds elegance and softness, while the material maintains calmness, balancing the vibrant energy of the bistro.
The interior accommodates diverse visitor needs through a variety of seating options. Bar stools at the high tables cater to those looking for a quick drink or light snack while staying connected to the lively atmosphere. The lounge area, featuring wooden armchairs and a low table, offers a peaceful spot for savoring coffee with a view. Traditional table arrangements provide comfortable dining or workspaces for visitors who prefer them.
Combining aesthetics and functionality, the overall concept of the Mezi Srnky interior creates a pleasant atmosphere for everyone. Whether through the playful floor pattern, tactile finishes, or contrasting colour palette, the design invites visitors to enjoy a unique and welcoming dining experience. By choosing durable materials and balancing raw and refined elements, the space encourages an appreciation of both beauty and practicality.
