Casa Ballena by World of Holistic Architecture is a family home in Elche, Spain, designed in 2023. The interior combines functional elements and integrates spaces for both private and communal use. A large modular sofa from EDRA, along with lighting from FLOS and Tom Dixon, enhances the living area. The design includes a children’s bedroom with denim blue curtains and a master bedroom emphasizing warmth through wood. Bathrooms feature oak, mint green finishes, and custom ceramic tiles for added character.
Casa Ballena was conceived as a family home that prioritises comfort while adapting to the lifestyle of its inhabitants. Functional elements are seamlessly integrated into the architecture, with a layout that promotes fluidity in the space. The design encourages family unity through common areas and offers personalised spaces for privacy.
The entrance acts as a central axis, connecting all the rooms in the house. It’s a small hallway covered with wood and yellow tones, generating fluidity towards both common and private areas. Wood serves as a common thread throughout the property, seen in floors and vertical coverings like the milled wood paneling.
The house features an open space combining the living room, kitchen, and dining room. The living room includes a milled wood covering with a barcode pattern and an integrated shelf. A large modular sofa from EDRA allows for versatile arrangements. Decorative lighting is provided by the Moon luminaire from FLOS and the Melt table lamp from Tom Dixon.
A structure finished in wood and Krion acts as a TV stand and kitchen island, complete with a curved flight of stairs leading to a breakfast area. Custom-made cabinets in a wood finish and a Krion piece integrate the worktop, counter-worktop, and sink in the kitchen. This design balances aesthetics with functionality through integrated lighting details in a hidden frame.
The dining room, differentiated by its flooring, maintains the essence of a terrace. The suspended light fixture above the dining table adds visual interest. The laundry room is cleverly concealed behind decorative curtains.
The children’s room, known as the “three whales,” is a combination of three rooms into a single space. Denim blue curtains can privatise certain areas, providing an accent of colour. The study area features ceramic pieces from Cerámica Ferrés, with integrated lighting in the ceramic tile fronts and sides of the work areas. Wardrobes finished with Finsa’s Creta model and wooden handles follow the blue colour scheme. Calisthenics bars, requested by the children, are also installed on the ceiling.
The master bedroom provides a relaxed atmosphere where wood is the predominant material, creating warmth. Custom-made wardrobes have handle details, and an en-suite bathroom offers an intimate experience.
The main bathroom features oak and mint green-finished wardrobes, a natural stone countertop, and a Krion washbasin. The guest bathroom is characterised by Fez tiles from WOW and a custom-made Krion washbasin for the dark wood furniture. These elements contribute to distinct and functional bathroom environments.
