Corfu House Merges Modern Design with Corfu’s Natural Landscape

Corfu House on the Greek island of Corfu underwent interior design refinement in 2023 by Georgios Apostolopoulos. Initially imagined by Tony Wynbourne and a local architect, the property’s design was further developed in collaboration with Apostolopoulos to blend contemporary design with the surrounding landscape.

The house, oriented along an east-west axis, features unobstructed views of the sea, with exterior stone walls and minimalist interiors that highlight panoramic vistas and embrace the natural environment.

Georgios Apostolopoulos refined the design of Corfu House on the Greek island of Corfu, emphasising a connection with its natural surroundings. Initially envisioned by Tony Wynbourne and a local architect, the property’s design was developed further in collaboration with Apostolopoulos.

The arrangement of the house prioritises unobstructed 180-degree views of the sea and surrounding landscape.

“Organised along an east-west axis, the villa’s layout ensures that every room offers panoramic views to the sea,” said Georgios Apostolopoulos.

A preserved olive tree symbolically roots the structure within its environment, while a heated pool extends from the master bedroom. The main pool on a lower terrace appears to merge with the distant sea.

“A heated pool extends from the master bedroom, blending seamlessly with the rocky terrain and fostering a serene, fluid connection between the building and the nature,” the designer continued.

Local stonework technicians crafted the house’s exterior from hand-shaped, locally sourced stone to blend into its natural context and provide an aesthetic backdrop that complements modern features.

Inside, the villa is organised across three levels. The ground floor is separated into two primary zones, with a master bedroom on the west side and the kitchen, living, and dining spaces to the east.

The lower ground floor houses four additional bedrooms with bathrooms and a small kitchenette, and includes a “cave-like” area with exposed natural rocks offering a quiet retreat.

“The simplicity of the interiors creates a calm, neutral backdrop that highlights the home’s natural surroundings and views,” the designer said.

“The interior design is intentionally minimalist, with contemporary detailing and understated joinery,” Apostolopoulos continued. “This quiet elegance allows the views to become the main focal point.”
