About Lumiar Apartment NR & PS

Reimagining Space: Light, Materiality, And Spatial Clarity

The refurbishment of this apartment in Lumiar, Lisbon, tried to capture the essence of the approach to architecture — where light, materiality, and spatial clarity blend seamlessly to create a refined and harmonious environment. This 4-bedroom apartment, initially designed in the early 2000s, was transformed into a space that feels expansive yet intimate, with a focus on fluidity and the subtle presence of each material.

Redefining The Bath: A Contemporary Twist

A key transformation was the reconfiguration of the apartment’s two original large bathrooms into three, one of which was designed as a guest toilet. This change allowed for a clear distinction between private and social areas, while still maintaining a natural flow between them. The design emphasizes simplicity and the quiet elegance of the spaces, where every element is purposeful and contributes to the overall experience.

Synergizing Separate Spaces: Through Careful Reinterpretation

The kitchen and pantry, previously isolated from the rest of the apartment, were fully reinterpreted to improve flow and allow light to penetrate deeper into the home. By opening up these areas, the project fosters a sense of connection between spaces, allowing natural light to pour in and creating a sense of continuity across the apartment. This transformation highlights the relationship between light, space, and material — where the careful use of glass and open volumes brings both clarity and warmth.

Details Elevating Function: Balanced Artistic And Practical Features

Every detail in the apartment has been meticulously designed to enhance both function and aesthetic. Custom carpentry features, including a prominent bookshelf in the living room, act as sculptural elements while maintaining their practical role in the home. The use of noble materials, such as walnut wood and Calacatta marble, further elevates the design. The walnut brings warmth and texture, while the Calacatta marble adds a sense of serene luxury. These materials are used with restraint, creating an atmosphere of elegance that is at once timeless and welcoming.

Responding To Modern Needs: A Spirit Of Timelessness

In this project, the aim was to design a living space that responds to the needs of modern life while maintaining a deep respect for the qualities of light, material, and space. The result hopefully is a home that invites both relaxation and interaction, offering a tranquil yet sophisticated environment. Through careful design and a focus on detail, we hope this transformation embodies a quiet elegance that will endure for years to come.
