Historic Yet Contemporary Design

The Casa M+P is a residential apartment located in the historic center of Monte di Procida in Italy, designed by Manuarino Architettura Design Comunicazione in 2024. Refreshing ideas and elegant organization breathe new life into this residential dwelling, combining historical interiors with a contemporary design approach.

A Long Staircase Leads to Tradition

Right in the center of Monte di Procida, in the oldest part of this small town in the Phlegraean Fields, this house can only be reached on foot via a long staircase, just like in the old days, just like on the islands. The ancient dwelling acts as the endpoint of a walk through the houses nestled in this historic fabric, breathing new life into the old urban design structure.

Entrance Collapses into Thoughtful Organization

Spanning the corridor of the dwelling is a large arched window that allows for plenty of natural light, which reflects onto a minimalistic floor plan. The cleanliness of the entrance space conceals a remarkable functionality. In fact, made of custom-made white lacquered open-pore oak, on one side we find a large shoe rack that conceals all the electrical panels and, on the other, a pocket emptier cupboard. This created a pocket bookcase composed of shelves inserted between the wall studs, producing a succinct yet clean layout.

Wallpaper Creates Practical Illusion on Flush Doors

Once through the entrance, you cross the central hallway, which is covered with wallpaper that is also applied to the flush doors of the bathroom and a bedroom. The decorative curtain-effect wallpaper creates a slight illusion, transforming the hallway into a quality space.

Level Change to the Bedroom with Vault Architecture

The hallway connects the entrance with the living area on one side and the master bedroom area on the other. The bedroom area is located on a slightly higher level and is reached via three steps. The volume of the bedroom is accentuated by the original, restored barrel vault that maintains the traditional structural design of the apartment. It also sets a strong contrast to the large exclusive walk-in closet. The closet features custom-made open-pore lacquered dove gray shelves, while the drawers below the closet are factory-made and white.

Open-Plan Community Space Across Many Heights

The living area opens on the opposite side of the hallway. A large open-plan kitchen, dining and living area features a different hierarchy of spaces thanks to the double height of the living room and half height on the dining side. A wooden loft above the kitchen houses a practical study area accessible via a completely custom-made wooden staircase supported by stainless steel cables that also serve as a protective railing up to the loft.

Aesthetic Surfaces Harmonise Design

The wooden composition served to accommodate the TV area, and some of the steps became bookshelves. This produced a particularly complex knot that nevertheless finds a very simple and aesthetically elegant solution. The kitchen with its large Dekton worktop embraces the dining area and culminates in a peninsula area with a cantilevered breakfast bar.

Color Palette and Materials Produce Calm Interior

Floor coverings, as well as wall coverings, are implemented with porcelain stoneware. The light-colored decorative walls are made with white three-dimensional decorations by Porcellanosa from Italy. The synergy with the clients has made it possible to create a very contemporary and functional apartment, even though it is located in a building with various historical and construction overlaps.

Result that Surprises

The result is a surprising harmony that once again rewards the work carried out in collaboration with the client. They, especially in difficult situations such as this, must have great faith in the project and in the studio that is carrying it out!
