The Nest: Prefab Off-Grid Retreat

FeaturedThe Nest: Prefab Off-Grid Retreat

The Nest rises from the crest of Keats Island, BC, Canada, as an off-grid retreat by DSS | Daria Sheina Studio. This compact, three-level escape leans on prefabrication and mass timber craft to negotiate rugged topography and dense Pacific Northwest forest while keeping a light footprint. Inside and out, the project turns its tight footprint into a vertical sequence of rooms tuned to mossy ground, filtered canopy light, and views out to Howe Sound.

Home for an Artist by Laura Killam Architecture

Located on a remote Northern Gulf island on the BC coast, Home for an Artist combines a house and painting studio designed by Laura Killam Architecture. The 650-square-foot (60-square-metre) house has an exterior clad in cedar boards and a roof of silvered cedar shingles. Designed for a multi-generational family, it features full-height glazing to connect its internal spaces to nature, offering sun exposure and views over surrounding meadows and wetlands.
