The United States-based Flower design team transformed a 1950s Boulder bungalow into a distinctive getaway featuring preserved steel-frame windows and sleek cabinetry walls. The revamped post-war structure maintains its original facade while introducing an open-plan interior layout that spills onto a deck with Flatiron views. This historic renovation merges past and present, complete with a new primary suite and a lower-level family area opening to a freshly landscaped pool area.

Club James entertainment venue was designed by Conner & Perry Architects across seven decades in Los Angeles. Adding to an iconic hillside property by John Lautner, the firm has previously overseen alterations to the pad made famous in The Big Lebowski. A swimming pool, dining terrace, barbecue zone and kitchen facilities feature in the hillside property, complete with a new movie screening room. Architects want their work to be “an evolution of the visual language” of the original designer.

Fergus Garber Architects redesigned the Modern Maybeck house in Atherton, California, embracing early 20th-century architectural principles. The design, completed in 2022, retains a few outer walls to preserve the home’s expansive footprint and reimagines the layout. The new home, inspired by Bernard Maybeck’s iconic style, features heavy timber specially sourced and assembled on-site, aiming to blend modern refinement with a sense of familiarity and ruggedness.

Shadowbox Takes Design Cues from Glacier National Park

Shadowbox is a mountain house in Whitefish, United States, designed by The Ranch Mine and completed in 2024. The structure, clad in black metal siding, reflects nearby Rocky Mountains and pine tree bark. Inside, a wood-clad recessed entry leads to the great room with 25-foot ceilings, surrounded by windows for natural light. The design incorporates fire-resistant features to withstand the Wildfire-Urban Interface environment.
