Under a Big Vault by Gosplan Architects

Set in Recco, Italy, Under a Big Vault is an apartment defined by a spacious vaulted area in stone, designed by Gosplan architects in 2022. It occupies a historic structure known as “the convent,” which underwent conversion following war damage. The architectural intervention emphasizes the duality of spaces, adding a blue hue to areas once open to the sky and featuring traditional flat ceilings in rooms facing the sea.

Alventosa Morell Arquitectes has designed Casa GJ, a house completed in 2024, located in Matadepera, Spain. The project features a design based on nine identical modules arranged along a staggered east-west axis, which serves to enhance visual relationships and contains shared spaces while maintaining privacy. The staggered layout improves cross-ventilation in summer and increases solar gain in winter, providing dynamic living spaces that interact with the surrounding environment.

Five Cove House in Halifax Channels a “Cottage Within a Cottage”

Distinctive architectural features, including a slatted facade, large windows, and a gravel entrance.

The Five Cove House by RHAD Architects is located on a Nova Scotia island, connected by a causeway. Designed in 2022, the 1,560-square-foot home, surrounded by five coves, replicates the under-stated typical seaside shed that has been split, pulled, flipped, and extended to create courtyards. The one-storey house was subdivided to present a main dwelling area with a kitchen, living, and dining space, as well as a guest suit, forming a “cottage within a cottage” for added seclusion.
