Hotel House Offers Boutique Stay in South Yarra

Hotel House is a compact two-bedroom residence in South Yarra, Australia, designed by Splinter Society in 2025. Combining architectural elegance with the allure of boutique hospitality, this project creates a luxurious city retreat.

Layers of Texture and Color

The design approach dissects the components of a boutique hotel, infusing them into the holiday retreat. Architectural expression manifests in two distinct volumes – smooth, light render above and highly textured dark timber below – intertwined to respond to site influences. This creates an internal courtyard and a rooftop balcony, offering privacy and amenity, and allowing for dramatic double-height spaces internally while accessing key light opportunities.

Hotel-Like Spatial Arrangement

The spatial organization of Hotel House mimics the expectations of a hotel experience. A curved, tunnel-like corridor leads from the entry, past a bag drop and into a drinks lounge beneath a dramatic void. Adjacent to this area, a chef’s kitchen and bar, refined in detail yet packed with function, is designed for sophisticated entertaining.

In line with the house’s adaptable nature, large sliding doors create an intimate music and reading room that can be opened up when required. A mezzanine study overlooks the void, leading to two luxurious bedroom suites and washrooms, adhering to the consistent hotel suite style.

Compact Spaces, Dramatic Lighting

The interior design relies on a rich palette that balances light and dark, texture and refinement, evoking intimacy, escape, and moments of vivid color. A diverse selection of materials including stones, metal finishes, plasters, leathers, glasses, and timber provides warmth and comfort throughout the compact space.

To maximize privacy and drama, top lighting is strategically employed, allowing artificial lighting to amplify textures and detail, washing metal screens and creating spatial layers and depth. This thoughtful design approach fills the spaces with washes of light throughout the day, adding a dynamic, playful element.

Ultimately, Hotel House is underpinned by ease and enjoyment, crafted to understand and elevate the client’s urban living experience with a luxurious edge. Through its meticulous attention to detail and innovative spatial organization, the project redefines city life, merging the best of architectural and interior worlds.
