About Stay Under the Radar
The nature retreat “Stay Under the Radar” exemplifies modern architecture, seamlessly blending into the historical context of the Buitenplaats Koningsweg. This unique residence serves as a testament to the site’s military heritage while offering an innovative living space. Constructed with a matte black faceted design, it draws inspiration from the stealthy F117 Nighthawk jet.
A Home with a Story
Situated in a wooded area, the retreat cleverly conceals itself within the landscape. Its angular shapes and fibreglass open mesh gratings mimic natural elements, creating an organic appearance. The interiors feature visible black steel profiles that contribute to a utilitarian and industrial character. Despite its closed façade, the structure incorporates a roof window that reveals breathtaking views of the stars and surrounding trees.
Sustainable and Contextual Design
The building’s foundation utilizes screw piles, causing minimal soil disturbance and allowing construction close to a towering oak tree. The design embraces low-tech solutions that improve indoor comfort. The black EPDM-covered exterior heats up rapidly, while strategically placed openings enable effective airflow throughout the structure. This design promotes a natural cooling effect, ensuring a pleasant interior climate during warm months.
Recognition and Awards
“Stay Under the Radar” recently garnered the 2024 Heuvelink Prize, recognizing its thoughtful integration with the environment. The jury praised the project for its originality and harmonious relationship with its surroundings. They described it as daring architecture with innovative material usage. This award highlights its contribution to contemporary design and architecture in Arnhem, establishing it as a must-visit destination for enthusiasts of modern retreats.
