A Bauhaus Apartment in the Heart of Haifa
The building, consisting of two floors and an open rooftop, is situated in the heart of the Carmel neighborhood in Haifa, Israel. The apartment, designed for a young family by Tal Goldsmith Fish design studio, was conceived and styled with a minimalist, precise, and meticulous approach, drawing inspiration from Japanese living spaces. This was done to create feelings of serenity and restraint within the space.
A NKoodynamic Constitutional Created the Hearts of the Home
The central design idea revolved around creating a dynamic and multi-layered central space that serves as the heart of the home, around which all the rooms and various functions are arranged. This central area – combining an entrance foyer, an internal patio, and a spacious living room – was designed to channel abundant natural light and optimal ventilation throughout the entire dwelling.
Wooden Partitions Enhance Light and Air Flow
These qualities are enhanced by a system of wooden partitions with integrated glass panels, which define the private areas while maintaining visual connection and a continuous flow of light and air, both inward and outward. This creates a sense of transparency and a constant connection between the different zones. The result is an architecturally rich envelope, filled with light, airy, and conveying a profound sense of spaciousness.
A Skylighted Internal Patio Imbues the Apartment With Nature
One of the project’s key features is a beautiful internal patio with lush greenery, topped by a skylight. This element brings nature directly into the home, imbuing it with feelings of tranquility and calm. The patio functions as a quiet gathering point and subtly blurs the boundary between indoors and outdoors.
A Gradual Journey Discovering the Home’s Various Spaces
To create a special and rich entry experience, we established a clear separation between the entrance foyer and the main living room. The foyer’s floor level was subtly lowered and clad in wooden parquet with a tatami-like texture, evoking a warm feeling and a connection to aesthetic traditions. In contrast, the higher-level living room floor was finished with concrete-grey resin, imparting a modern, polished, and airy aesthetic. This contrast in levels and material choices creates a rich material composition, inviting occupants into a gradual journey of discovering the home’s various spaces.
A Minimalist Steel Staircase Leads to a Crafts Workshop
Along the apartment’s central axis, concealed behind an integrated wooden wall that incorporates hidden storage, a minimalist steel staircase is revealed. This element leads to an upper level, which serves as a crafts workshop for the homeowner, and from there, extends to a sprawling private rooftop overlooking the panoramic Haifa Bay.
An Authentic and Durable Material Palette to Cultivate Calm
In selecting the material palette, emphasis was placed on authenticity, durability, and a clean, elegant aesthetic that aligns with the minimalist philosophy. The reduction of materials and the use of monochromatic colors were strategically employed to cultivate an overall sense of calm and harmony throughout the dwelling.
Significant Structural Challenges Overcome During Renovation
The renovation project of this venerable Bauhaus building presented significant challenges, primarily structural. Meticulous planning and precise execution allowed us to overcome these complexities and forge a harmonious architectural blend between the old and the new, in a manner that feels both natural and effortlessly integrated.
