Valley House Uses a Refined Palette to Quiet the Victorian Interior

Valley House is a 2023 house remodel in San Francisco, California, by Studio BBA. The project restores a 1910 Victorian while opening the rear of the home to wider Bay views and a lighter daily rhythm. A restrained palette of honed Carrera marble, pale gray cabinetry, black steel, and bleached red oak gives the interior its calm, edited feel.

About Valley House

Studio BBA helps the clients realize their vision for this remodel within budget by focusing on a few key moments. The result is an airy home that respects its 1910 Victorian identity while reflecting the modern sensibility of its owners.

The design draws on Japanese ideals of simplicity and the careful use of space. A limited material palette sets the tone: honed Carrera marble, pale gray custom cabinetry, black steel, painted accents, and bleached and whitewashed red oak floors.

The kitchen and dining area become the main event. Studio BBA removes a pair of ramshackle utility porches at the rear of the building, opening long views toward the Bay and giving the house a more generous connection to the outside.

A new lower level adds a family hangout area, laundry, and bathroom, after excavation and structural upgrades make the change possible. Elsewhere, the house receives a lighter renewal through modest refinishing and carefully handled details.

Energy performance shapes the work as much as appearance. Heavy insulation allows the house to be heated by a single freestanding high-efficiency gas fireplace in the dining room, while new operable windows and doors are placed to support passive cooling.

The building process matches the care of the finished rooms. A small, experienced, craft-oriented construction team executes the work with refinement, carrying the project from concept to completion with steady precision.
