This approach not only captures the beauty of the surroundings but also emphasises comfort and modernity within a steep topography.
Garden Retreat by David Flynn Architects extends a 1970s bungalow in Blackrock, County Dublin, Ireland, into its surrounding garden. Designed in 2021, the project enhances the home’s connection with nature by adding glazed sliders and rooflights to the rear and features to the front such as external insulation and a timber porch, allowing for a more open interior and increased access to the garden spaces.
Centerfield Studio has completed its first home redesign in Portland, Oregon’s Northeast neighborhood. Originally built in 1958 by Peacock Construction, Fernwood is a two-story house set into a hillside. Centerfield Studio focused on minimizing the home’s original negative aspects while preserving its classic features, such as the gently sloping roofline.
Vietnamese studio CTA – Creative Architects has crafted Nam House in Ho Chi Minh City. Designed in 2024, the specialists used the structure’s brick facade and water feature to evoke bioclimatic design. The residence comprises three volumes of varying sizes. Industrial beams frame the block which is covered with long, thin and soft red clay bricks in a raked process. Additionally, tall bamboo plants cover the courtyard, acting as a screen.
Located in Perth, Australia, Veiled House features a striking blend of old and new, designed by JUO in 2019. Originally a 1908 worker’s cottage, the designers aimed to celebrate its historic character while creating a modern family home.
