About Downtown House
Restoring History with a Modern Twist
This BILD award-winning endeavor skillfully converted a century-old, subdivided house into a single-family home. The redesigned space now boasts a sunken foyer and dining room, seamlessly integrated into the open concept main floor. Beyond structural changes, the design pays homage to the clients’ ancestral heritage. Importantly, a treasured family heirloom elegantly anchors the new foyer, reflecting the serenity of a Japanese garden.
Crafting Space and Light
To create the sunken foyer and dining room, we first removed the existing floor, then installed a new, elevated floor system. Consequently, this modification gifted the clients almost 8 inches (20.3 cm) of extra headroom in the basement.
Furthermore, for an unobstructed view to the backyard and an open main floor, we installed several steel beams. These beams replaced former support walls, and we also strategically relocated the exterior porch supports. This careful reconfiguration not only elevates the home’s functionality but also its aesthetic appeal, marrying historical charm with contemporary design.
