Casa PR by [i]da Arquitectos Embraces Coastal Landscape

Casa PR, designed by [i]da Arquitectos in 2024, is a house in Lourinhã, Portugal. Its design leverages the sloping site to offer sweeping views of the Atlantic coastline and surrounding landscape. The house has a distinctive “L” shape, with the lower floor embracing a south-facing garden and pool.

Stunning views and intimate design

Casa PR is situated on an irregularly shaped plot with gentle slopes, positioned on a privileged elevation. This location offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic coast and the surrounding countryside, where agricultural fields stretch over green hills.

[i]da Arquitectos designed the house in such a way as to guarantee optimum sun exposure for the interior spaces, while at the same time protecting the exterior areas from the strong winds characteristic of the western coastal strip.

Innovative volumetry and garden design

The building’s volumetry features an L-shaped lower floor, which opens out generously onto the south-facing garden and swimming pool. This design embraces the landscape and creates an intimate and protected space.

The upper floor, with its simpler shape, acts as a roof for the building, facing northeast. It provides expansive views without compromising privacy, demonstrating a careful approach to balancing aesthetic appeal and functionality.

Harmonization of the Façade and Pergola

The main façade, with its more regular and sober lines, deliberately contrasts with the façade facing the garden, which reveals a more fluid and organic structure. This fluidity creates a dialog with the surrounding nature, reinforcing the building’s connection to its environment.

A covered pergola, supported by natural limestone walls, defines the shaded outdoor spaces. It gives the architectural ensemble a unified appearance, reinforcing the coherence of the design.

Interior layout and continuity

Inside, the first floor offers a continuous flow between spaces, with the living room, dining room, kitchen and a bedroom all opening directly onto the outside. This layout allows for continuous interaction between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape, enhancing the living experience.

The upper floor is reserved for the master bedroom, a private retreat equipped with a walk-in closet and an en-suite bathroom, providing luxury and seclusion.

Integration of outbuildings and exteriors

In addition to the main building, an annex is planned for storage and technical areas. It is connected to the main structure by a landscaped courtyard, creating a smooth transition between the spaces.

The outdoor area has been designed to be a true extension of the interior of the house. Next to the pool, seating areas with continuous concrete benches invite relaxation and contemplation. At the same time, the natural limestone retaining wall provides a sense of solidity and continuity, creating an organic connection with the terrain. This careful integration of exterior and interior spaces enriches the living environment, offering diverse experiences in harmony with nature.
