Filtered daylight lands on the Lunawood siding as it steps away from the main house, catching the grain before slipping into shade beneath the tall trees. Inside, pale wood and quiet furnishings hold the light, giving the small cottage a gentle clarity that holds from morning to evening.

This detached accessory dwelling unit sits in the backyard of an existing single-family home in Lake Forest Park, north of Seattle, and functions as a compact house for guests and remote work. Studio Zerbey Architecture + Interiors arranges the rooms over two levels, pairing a dark, low-maintenance exterior with an airy interior palette that stays bright even under the tree canopy. The project leans on warm finishes and simple pieces so daily use stays easy and adaptable.

Balancing House And Garden

The DADU sits in a clearing between mature trunks, placed to protect existing trees while keeping a short walk from the main residence. A compact footprint leaves generous lawn and planting beds intact, so the cottage feels like a quiet edge rather than a new center. Sliding glass doors open to a small concrete terrace and lawn-level chairs, turning the ground floor into an extension of the garden during parties or long summer evenings.

Dark Shell, Light Interior

Outside, Lunawood siding wraps the upper level, paired with painted cement board and a dark metal roof that keeps the composition crisp against the foliage. The wood will gradually gray, allowing the volume to recede visually while the durable cladding and roof handle the region’s wet winters with little upkeep. Inside, white walls, pale plywood ceilings, and simple trim amplify daylight from carefully placed windows, making the compact rooms feel generous without extra ornament.

Ground Floor As Flexible Studio

The lower level functions as a flexible studio, ready for workdays, reading, or gathering before guests head outside. Polished concrete underfoot pairs with a patterned rug, while a slim desk, swivel chair, and open shelving sit against one wall, turning the room into an efficient home office without visual clutter. A full-height glass door brings in garden views and daylight, and the adjacent stair tucks neatly to the side so movement between levels stays direct and intuitive.

Upper Level Retreat

Upstairs, a single loft-like room holds sleeping, a compact kitchenette, and storage, with the bathroom tucked behind a simple partition. The sloped plywood ceiling and wood flooring create a continuous envelope, while corner and slot windows frame tree canopies and draw light across the bed and built-in guardrail. In the bathroom, a light wood vanity, slim wall sconce, and vertically laid blue-green tile give a calm rhythm to the small room without competing with the rest of the interior.

Everyday Use And Occasions

On weekdays the cottage reads as a focused workplace, with the desk, narrow storage pieces, and compact kitchen supporting long hours without distraction. During visits or backyard gatherings, the ground floor becomes a social room that spills to the terrace, while the upper level turns into a quiet bedroom separated from the main house. Simple, durable finishes keep cleaning straightforward between uses, so the small building stays ready for the next task or guest.

From the lawn, the DADU sits under its angled roofline with chairs at the threshold and tall trees framing each corner. Warm light from the upper windows reaches into the garden at night, reminding the family that a guest room, studio, and garden cottage all live within this one small volume. The result is a compact companion to the main house that feels anchored in its wooded yard.
