Revitalizing CASA LT: A Blend of Nature and Architecture
MAIN OFFICE, an architectural firm with bases in Mexico and Sweden, recently transformed CASA LT. This residential complex, set in Mexico’s lush tropical greenery, offers a serene retreat in Sayulita, a renowned surfers’ haven. Perfectly situated on the beachfront, the building harmoniously merges with the rugged, scenic topography, offering stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.
CASA LT’s design pays homage to the existing landscape. The architecture integrates seamlessly with the natural surroundings, including living palm and almond trees, plantains, and ferns. This careful consideration ensures unobstructed waterfront views from every space, both inside and out.
Preservation and Innovation in Design
Initially built in the 1950s, the original complex of three hilltop houses faced deterioration due to humidity and neglect. MAIN OFFICE’s first objective was to renovate and preserve the original character. They then focused on adding a new main building and a guest house closer to the beach.
Dante Borgo, co-founder of MAIN OFFICE, explains, “The project reinterprets the original complex’s design parameters, maintaining a small village feel within the site.”
The design connects different levels with concrete platforms, walkways, and lush gardens, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors. The single-family house boasts a kitchen with a panoramic view, an open-plan living and dining area connected to an infinity pool, a bedroom with a custom-built concrete bathtub, and a terrace offering breathtaking ocean views.
Sustainable Materials and Local Craftsmanship
CASA LT’s construction and materials are locally sourced. White stucco-finished cement blocks form the walls, while polished concrete adds to the floors and fixed furniture’s architectural quality. For interior furniture, closets, doors, and window frames, indigenous Parota wood is used for its resilience to humidity, salt air, and strong sunlight.
CASA LT is part of MAIN OFFICE’s broader research initiative. It’s just steps away from their other projects like CASA GALERIA, a standout residential complex, and the upcoming CASA REAVIS, set to complete by the end of 2018.
