How to Rearrange Your Bedroom to Make It Feel Spacious

Does your bedroom feel a bit cramped and claustrophobic? You may not be able to knock out a wall and expand the size of your bedroom, but you can probably make some changes to give it a more open and roomier feel. Here’s how to do it.

Change out Large Furniture

Probably the biggest culprit in making your bedroom look tiny is the large furniture in there. If you can downsize your bureau or dresser or even move them to a different room, you will have a lot more space to work with. You could try transitioning some or all of the clothes from a dresser to the closet and store the remaining clothes in the basement or attic if you have clothes you don’t wear very often. Any furniture you can get rid of, no matter how small, will open up the space. If you must have a dresser, though, then consider changing out your current one for something smaller.

Bring in Sunlight

Did you know that natural light helps to make a room look more open? Anything you can do to lighten or brighten a room will chase away shadows and make the available room more apparent. If you are used to having your curtain closed or you have your windows blocked up, then bring in some natural sunlight to open up the room a bit. You can also set up mirrors or use light-colored furniture, paint, or décor to reflect light around the room and give it a more spacious look.

Push Furniture to the Walls

If some of your furniture is not placed snugly up against the walls, then that can cut up the space in your bedroom quite a bit. Instead of having space on both sides of the bed, you can try sticking the bed in a corner and see how it frees up the room. That gives you a larger central space rather than splicing the room up into slivers of space.

By pushing large furniture items up against the wall or next to other furniture, you open up the central space and make it easier to move around the room. As you move the furniture, you may see your bedroom is in need of a serious home cleaning. For a deep cleaning that makes the bedroom brighter and more appealing, you may want to hire a professional cleaning service.

Lower the Bed

A high bed may look impressive, but it can distract from the roominess of the bedroom. If you use a low-slung bed or lower your current bed, you will open up some of the space above the bed and make the room look bigger. You can also add a hanging light or other hanging from the ceiling to show off the height of the space.

Install Floating Bedside Tables

Your bedside table takes up floor space that it doesn’t have to. If you raise these tables off the ground and attach them to the wall, you will make more floor space. This is also a really chic, modern design choice that will look great for years to come.
