The Transformation of a Historic House in Central Catania

Embarking on a transformative journey, CCC represents the demolition and renovation of a multi-level house nestled in the heart of Catania. This unique project breathes new life into an architecture steeped in history, dating back to the 1800s.

Reimagining Tradition with Contemporary Vision

The design philosophy behind this transformation intertwines respect for the past with a fervent pursuit of a new architectural identity. Sicilian tradition subtly asserts itself through several design elements, a restrained color palette, and carefully selected materials. The harmonious intersection of old and new generates an intriguing dialogue of shapes and colors with the historical context and its environment.

A Multi-Level Family Home Designed for Modern Living

The renovated single-family house spans three levels. The street level accommodates a newly created garage. Ascending to the mezzanine, one is greeted by a welcoming living and dining area. The private living space extends to the second floor, where the peaceful sanctuary of the sleeping quarters is located.

Innovative Use of Materials and Preservation of Original Features

This remarkable transformation required significant structural changes, including the complete demolition and reconstruction of part of the building facade and all floors using cross-laminated timber (CLT or xlam). Meanwhile, the side area pays homage to its history, preserving its original load-bearing vaults. The interplay between the renovated and preserved areas is strikingly visible through the large street-facing window that showcases all floors.

Natural Aesthetics and Privacy Considerations

The aesthetic narrative of the house champions the use of warm, natural materials juxtaposed against oxidized iron and Corten steel. The impressively large staircase, doubling as a functional piece of furniture, invites the dwellers towards the sleeping area featuring three bedrooms. Privacy is paramount; thus, a lush curtain of natural vegetation screens the large street-side window.

Balanced Simplicity in Design

The language of this renovation echoes simplicity in architecture. It maintains a harmonious balance of volumes, lights, and colors. The house features resin flooring which intersects with original cement tiles, effectively demarcating spaces and functions within different parts of the home. This nuanced approach underscores the essence of modern living while deeply respecting the rich historical fabric of the structure.
