Designed by Garret Cord Werner in 2019, this waterfront residence is located in San Juan County, Washington, and sculpted into the bedrock to interface elegantly with the surrounding environment.

The curated palette of materials reflects the natural elements, with natural stone entering the interior spaces as a unique feature. The grand pavilion offers expansive views of the water and each space is designed to frame the surrounding natural beauty.

The young couple who commissioned the project desired a home that would be their sanctuary outside their busy professional lives and a place that could serve as a modern backdrop for personal design experimentation while supporting the wife’s growing business as a floral designer and owner of an online boutique, Slow Sunday, selling modern, minimalist Japanese wares.

The building pays homage to the lost art of traditional craftsmanship while maintaining a modern aesthetic and features over 600,000 handmade bricks from master brickworks Petersen Tegl in Denmark.

The project, which was completed in 2022, showcases Worrell Yeung’s interest in expressing architectural volume through a simplification of the elements while echoing and updating the agrarian vernacular.

Further into the site, terraced gardens transition from the street to the lake and invite pauses at each level. Inside, the home is light and airy, with white walls and black-gridded windows, while the homeowner’s art collections create a unique atmosphere. The general contractor admired the design team’s insistence on quality control throughout construction.
