Contemporary North Bondi Penthouse
This two level penthouse designed by MPR Design Group is anchoring the corner of a new mixed use development at North Bondi, overlooking Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach.
Description by MPR Design Group
The project is a two level penthouse anchoring the corner of a new mixed use development at North Bondi, overlooking Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach. The plan form of the penthouse was biomorphic, resulting from strict building controls and view corridors. Using the biomorphic shape as a generator of form, the external corners of the penthouse are rounded and internal elements utilise curving sinuous forms to shape the spaces. Curvilinear shapes are carved out of walls to create spatial connections between the two floor levels – living and dining spaces on the upper level and bedrooms on the lower level. This spatial separation made optimal use of the beach views and solar access.
Internally, a restricted palette of materials has been used – American Oak floors throughout with all wall surfaces and joinery in Corian and natural white paint. Sheer white curtains offset the hard surfaces and provide a filter for the strong Australian light. Limestone and timber decking have been used on the external terraces. The ultimate effect is a penthouse that has differing visual and character moods due to the light and sun changing through the day and through the seasons. It represents the ultimate in beach side living in contemporary Sydney.
