Revitalizing an Old Farmhouse: The Beginning
Our project emerged from the renovation of a once-neglected farmhouse.
Upon removing the dilapidated materials from the old façade, we found that the house actually consisted of three smaller houses, built according to the former owner’s needs. This discovery served as the basis for our innovative design concept.
Preserving the Original Structure and Creating Unity
We decided to preserve the original volumes of the three structures and showcase their unique shape. To unify them, we introduced a perforated slab with a central patio, which allows natural light to flood the entire social area on the ground floor.
The central slab features a garden roof finish, providing an intimate garden space for all rooms and private areas within the house.
Contrasting Materiality for Different Floors
Our goal was to create a striking contrast between the two floors in terms of materiality. The ground floor boasts a rougher texture, highlighting the tectonic nature of the construction and creating the sensation of living within an excavated granite mass (the wall). This design establishes a strong connection with the outdoor space.
On the upper floor, we emphasized the geometry of the three original houses by showcasing them as pure white volumes bathed in light. This floor’s high ceilings, wooden shutters, and a combination of white and wooden floors evoke the ambiance of a country house.
