About Apartment OE

Designing a Dream Home: An Architect’s Personal Challenge and Opportunity

Tapan Shah, principal-architect at Studionine, Ahmedabad, embraced the unique challenge and opportunity of designing his own home. His vision and enthusiasm transformed a 1200 sq.ft (111.5 sq.m) top-floor apartment overlooking Ahmedabad city’s growing skyline into a comfortable haven for his family of three.

A Child-Friendly Playroom with Transparent Walls

The architect made a few modifications to the original layout, opening up the third bedroom adjacent to the living room and terrace. Transparent walls now enclose this space, creating a delightful playroom for their child.

Natural Light and a Soothing Color Palette

Ample natural light fills the apartment, creating a calming atmosphere with muted tones and an easy-going vibe. A palette of beiges, light-pinks, and textured whites, combined with metallic frames and brass accents, sets the tone for the home.

Minimalism Meets Artful Design

With a goal of designing a minimal, clutter-free, yet artful home, the architect incorporated creative utility and storage solutions. The apartment layout is divided into two privacy levels: semi-private zones include the living area, terrace, dining area, and adjacent playroom, while the master bedroom, guest bedroom, and service areas offer more privacy.

Elegant Living Area with Indian Natural Stone

The living area welcomes guests with two feature walls clad in a spectacular Indian natural stone, showcasing exquisite grains and textures. Plush pink couches and a marble-topped coffee table create a serene vibe against this artistic backdrop. Hand-painted artwork by the designer’s partner adds joy to the living room corners.

Custom-Designed Shelves and Glass-Walled Playroom

The transition space between the living and dining areas includes custom-designed, slender white shelves for knickknacks and collectibles. To the right, transparent glass walls in thin metal framing surround the playroom, infusing vibrancy and lightness into the home.

Inviting Open Kitchen and Dining Area

The dining area and open kitchen form a calm, inviting center of the home, accentuated by a beautiful brass-finish chandelier. The kitchen, both functional and aesthetically pleasing, is perfect for hosting gatherings or enjoying a quiet meal alone.

Cozy Guest Bedroom and Luxurious Master Bedroom

The guest bedroom features a minimal, warm design with a slightly darker palette, while the master bedroom offers a more indulgent and elegant space. A custom-made wooden console and a minimal floating TV unit demonstrate the designer’s attention to detail and sophistication.
