Living Without Boundaries Apartment by AIM

AIM has revamped an apartment in Milan’s center, prioritizing open and sociable spaces. Designed in 2024, the “Living Without Boundaries” project features dynamic interiors where volumes are arranged around a central living area. The renovation focused on a seamless living space, incorporating diverse finishes and functional elements like flamed iron and lime-clad volumes.

Open-Plan Layout Emphasizes Sociable Living

Living Without Boundaries, an apartment designed by AIM in Milan, features a dynamic environment where main volumes are arranged around the central living area. The renovation focused on opening up the living room entirely while preserving reinforced concrete load-bearing structures.

“Harmonious and welcoming space that fully reflects the spirit and aspirations of those who live in it,” said the studio.

The interior unfolds in vibrant forms, with diverse finishes demarcating different zones. The main volumes are composed of woody stripes, integrated into faux bois walls and backlight glass blocks.

Upon entry, a full-height wooden boiserie featuring diagonal slats extends above the functional kitchen, leading the gaze toward Milan’s skyline through large windows. This boiserie also conceals access to one of the sleeping areas and the dining room. Installed on the functional wall, the kitchen has porous stone surfaces and back-painted glass elements.

Opposite the kitchen, a central kitchen island combines wooden details, structural iron and stone, and faces both the dining and living areas.

Material and Room Settings Add Character

Another architectural element stands between an exposed beam and pillar: a flamed iron and lime volume hiding a multifunctional space with a laundry room, book shelf, fluted glass panels and wine rack.

The final element is a gray-green lime partition separating the living area from the main bedroom, amplified by mirrors positioned on each side of this wall. One of the mirrored panels doubles as a door, opening into a bedroom designed with calming interiors. A cozy headboard is installed onto the wall, giving a warm backdrop.

“From the layout to the finishes and furnishings, every detail was designed to improve the owners’ quality of life,” the studio continued.

The layout is further complemented by furnishings, including a large modular sofa placed at the center of the living room, offering double-sided interactions with the TV area and dining room while allowing individuals freedom for relaxation. The interior features pieces from design brands such as De Padova and Cassina.

Designed with a striking balance between aesthetics and functionality, the intervention transforms an attic apartment into a harmonious space by making use of materials and spatial settings.
