Elua House by Patio Livity

Located in Bandung, West Java, Elua House by Patio Livity merges two separate masses to symbolize a couple’s journey. Designed in 2023, it features a blank white facade, natural stone, and a perforated metal fence. Inside, a koi pond, skylight, and zen garden blend functionality and aesthetics, emphasizing natural light and passive cooling.

Exterior elements and environment

A poetic design gesture reinforces this concept: a tree positioned in front of the white massifs projects a silhouette onto the façade, reinforcing the visual narrative. The closed exterior, with solid materials such as batu curi (natural stone), reflects the couple’s introverted nature, while a perforated metal fence balances privacy with air flow. The car shed is made of dark-toned natural stone for durability and easy maintenance, in line with the overall concept of simplicity and practicality. Indirect lighting dominates the front area of the house, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. General lighting is used selectively to highlight circulation routes and the main architectural features.

Layout and interior features

Upon entering, the design introduces a unique spatial experience by incorporating an interior terrace. A Zen garden and a carp pond extend into the interior, blurring the boundary between nature and living space. A glass railing replaces the solid barriers, ensuring an uninterrupted connection between the living space and the serene water source. Above the carp pond, a skylight floods the interior with natural light, reducing dependence on artificial lighting. In addition, a strategic space between the skylight and the walls facilitates natural ventilation. During the day, the water in the carp pond evaporates and the incoming air cools as it passes through, creating an efficient passive cooling system that increases indoor comfort.

Project challenges and solutions

Designing a first home for a newlywed couple is a significant challenge, as it has to be both meaningful and adaptable to the evolution of their journey. For this introverted couple, the house needed to be a place to recharge and connect. One of the main considerations was to harmonize their favourite activities. Careful spatial planning integrates the husband’s passion for koi fish and their shared love of movies. This design reinforces the home’s role as a space for shared experiences. The open-plan layout of the living, dining and pantry areas promotes interaction while maintaining intimacy. Moderate ceiling heights maintain intimacy and improve air circulation, while a high ceiling in the living room establishes a focal point and prevents the space from appearing too enclosed.

Selection of materials and aesthetic balance

The interior of Elua House strikes a balance between depth and contrast. Dark wood panels dominate the palette, giving a feeling of warmth and sophistication. To counterbalance this, light marble is introduced in the pantry and on the floor. Gold accents punctuate the design, adding a touch of luxury and avoiding monotony. Elua House is a thoughtful blend of functionality, aesthetic refinement and symbolism of the journey and personal connection of its inhabitants. Born from the personal needs of its owners, it reflects the mutual respect between them. This house provides a space where they can share their differences without disturbance, allowing them to coexist harmoniously while growing together in a meaningful and enriching environment.
