Casa Horizonte by Mamey Home

Casa Horizonte sits on the cliffs of Ericeira, Portugal, shaped by Mamey Home for a client who surfs and works remotely. The house, a ground-up residence on a west-facing plot above the Atlantic, answers the view while guarding privacy from neighbors. A rigorous nine-square grid anchors the plan, setting the stage for terraces, patios, and a roof terrace that extend daily life outdoors.

Late sun washes the cliff edge as the Atlantic throws back a steady shimmer. From the street, the house holds its line, then opens wide to water and sky.

This is a two-level house in Ericeira by Mamey Home, shaped for sea views, privacy, and measured light. The project builds around a clear structural order: a nine-square grid that organizes rooms, patios, and terraces into a readable field while keeping the plan agile.

Establish the Grid

A disciplined 3×3 matrix sets the framework, each cell defined by columns—some expressed, some concealed—to cue proportion and movement. Social rooms and the main bedroom claim the ocean-facing band, while intermediate cells hold circulation, a double-height volume, and framed thresholds that pace the day.

Carve the Levels

The site’s slope does the heavy lifting, letting a semi-buried lower level tuck garage and service rooms into cooler ground. Above, quieter rooms occupy the upper floor, linked by a light stair that stitches levels so air, views, and sun pass cleanly through.

Lower the Living

Set one step down, the living room drops closer to the garden to deepen the sense of shelter facing the sea. That move tightens the horizon line, turning couches and conversation toward the water while giving the upper band breathing room for circulation.

Link Kitchen and Patio

An open, functional kitchen sits within the social field and connects to a small upper-floor patio for daylight and breeze. Hidden doors and continuous thresholds keep service zones discreet, while wooden niches line key openings to temper concrete with touch and tone.

Temper the West

Facing fully west, the house tightens to the street and neighboring plots, then releases toward the ocean to manage heat and view. Patios, terraces, and an accessible rooftop extend daily routines outdoors: morning coffee tucked from glare, sunset dinners turned straight to the horizon.

Inside, polished concrete underfoot and exposed slabs overhead bring a calm, exacting rhythm—wood and metal accents add warmth where the hand lands. Construction unfolds with local coordination by Portuguese architect Raul Serra, whose permitting and site work ground the Madrid-developed project in place and craft.

As the day drops, long shadows cross the grid and pull rooms into relief. The order never shouts, yet it carries everything, from the quiet stair to the open roof, right to the edge.
