Casa C+S: Light-Filled Family Apartment
Casa C+S is a renovated apartment in Bormio, Italy, reimagined by GiB Studio from two adjoining units into one cohesive home. The project opens up the former maze of rooms into a generous living area facing southeast, while a quiet northwest wing gathers the bedrooms and baths. Local timber, pale surfaces, and custom joinery give this contemporary interior a distinctly Alpine character and a quietly warm everyday rhythm.

Light washes across pale oak boards and climbs the warm ceiling boards, tying floor and roof into one continuous timber shell. A long sofa, built-in shelving, and a soft armchair cluster around the television wall, forming a calm center for family life.
This apartment renovation in Bormio, Italy, by GiB Studio combines two former units into a single contemporary home with a strong material thread. The central entrance now anchors the plan, sending one wing toward an open living area and the other toward a compact night zone. Throughout, the project leans on local wood species, translucent partitions, and integrated furnishings to give each room a clear role and a consistent atmosphere.
Organizing Day And Night
From the entrance, the apartment divides distinctly yet without drama. One side opens to the southeast, where living room, dining, and kitchen merge into a single free-flowing room that still holds separate pockets for each activity. The opposite wing turns northwest and gathers three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a small laundry around a more private corridor. This simple zoning lets daily noise stay in the social areas while the quieter rooms remain protected for reading, rest, and children’s routines.
Shaping Rooms With Joinery
Built-in furniture carries much of the project’s character. In the living area, a full-height media wall in light fir folds cupboards, open niches, and the television into one precise volume, leaving the floor clear and generous. A translucent divider in the center of the plan separates entrance and small study from the main living room, its timber grid and ribbed glass panels storing books and objects on both sides while still passing natural light. Storage runs quietly along other walls as well, so everyday clutter slips into drawers and cabinets rather than spilling into view.
Warm Timber, Clean Lines
Materials root the apartment in its Alpine setting. Oak plank flooring runs throughout, giving a continuous underlay of warmth beneath lighter walls and white cabinetry. Brushed fir surfaces wrap many pieces of joinery, and cirmolo wood lines the ceiling in the day area and the main bedroom furniture, adding visible grain and a distinct resin scent. The kitchen keeps to white fronts, slim timber countertops, and open shelving, so the wood’s color and texture stay present without feeling heavy. Simple bar stools, recessed pulls, and flush fronts keep lines clean and uncluttered.
Color Accents And Quiet Rooms
Neutral backgrounds let selective color do the work. In the dining area, a light timber table and gray chairs sit below the same warm ceiling boards, with a vivid world map print adding a playful note. The children’s bedroom uses a deep green wall behind the beds to frame pale timber bunks and wardrobes, turning the sleeping corner into a clear focal point. Bathrooms follow the same discipline: one gathers a circular mirror, white basin, and wood vanity against calm walls, while another sets a freestanding tub in a niche backed by a muted teal plane.
As the day fades, the grain of the timber ceiling and floors holds the last light and softens the apartment’s edges. Custom joinery, translucent partitions, and carefully placed color keep every room legible without excess decoration. The result is a compact mountain home where material consistency underpins daily routines, from morning coffee at the island to bath time in the quiet northwest wing.
