Slot House by ANX / Aaron Neubert Architects
Slot House is a house in Los Angeles, United States, designed by ANX / Aaron Neubert Architects for a steep hillside site. The project recesses its garage into the slope and places two levels of living above, using a bridge, retaining walls, and a continuous skylight to tie the house to the terrain. Long sightlines, framed views, and a private rear terrace guide the experience from street to hillside.

About Slot House
The design uses a layered architectural strategy of carving, retaining, and bridging to work with the terrain. The garage is recessed into the hillside, creating a solid base for two levels of living above. This move lets the structure recede into the slope, where a series of retaining walls forms a private rear terrace—an outdoor room carved from the earth and sheltered by the surrounding landscape. That introspective condition provides a quiet counterpoint to the more open, street-facing facade.
A bridge extends from the second floor to connect directly with the upper portion of the site, stitching the house into the hillside and allowing movement between the building and the natural terrain. The gesture reinforces the project’s main ambition: to join architecture and landscape as one continuous experience.
At the center of the residence, a continuous skylight aligns with views at each end, the stair, the hallway, and the bridge, bringing daylight deep into the interior. This linear opening establishes a visual corridor from the street-facing porch to the rear terrace, strengthening spatial continuity and pulling natural light down through the circulation spine.
The primary living areas are arranged as open, flowing volumes that encourage movement and layered views. Sightlines run from the entry porch through the living and dining rooms toward the private terrace beyond, loosening the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Carefully placed glazing frames views of the surrounding mountains and reservoir while maintaining privacy from neighboring properties.
Compact in footprint yet expansive in experience, Slot House reflects ANX’s response to a difficult site. Through a balance of openness and enclosure, exposure and refuge, the project recasts hillside living as a sequence of connected moments.
