Echoes of Ancient Architecture in Modern Madrid
Historically, Greeks, Etruscans, and Romans employed compluvium in elite homes to guide rainwater to the impluvium. Originally, this central opening in the domus vented smoke from indoor fires. As time progressed, this opening expanded, enhancing lighting, ventilation, and water collection in the impluvium.
Madrid’s Modern Compluvium: A Balance of Openness and Privacy
This Madrid-centered house reimagines this ancient element, offering seclusion from adjacent structures. Rooms radiate inward, and their aligned design provides a continuous view across the plot. This design achieves a dual purpose: fostering an expansive feel while maintaining defined space boundaries.
A Dynamic Outdoor Haven
The design includes a vast outdoor space where shadows dance throughout the day. Nestled within lies a reflective water feature, positioned precisely to offer rare, unobstructed views over neighboring homes.
