Light pours over lacquered color and curved profiles. The first turn reveals a red spiral, its skin catching shadows that drift across pale walls and glossy planes.

This penthouse in Beijing is crafted by Shangceng Design for a mother, daughter, and grandmother, with 600 ㎡ (6,458 sq ft) of interior terrain. The narrative centers on an interior palette and furnishing strategy rooted in Mondrian primaries and supple arcs, where color sets program and mood.

Enter in Red

A vermilion spiral stair greets the threshold like a live current. Its smooth helix tightens the approach, then releases to a landing that overlooks books, bars, and conversation zones. Under shifting daylight, the stair’s tone deepens toward maroon, while the handrail glints as people move. One vivid object sets the cadence for the home.

Library Under Stair

Beneath the stair, dark wood shelving gathers a family library within reach of the entry. Slim light strips wash each shelf, turning book spines into a gentle frieze that suggests quiet study and nightly reads. The nook works as lectern for live broadcasts and as a filming backdrop for reading lessons. It also hosts children’s storytelling and moonlit Pilates, an adaptable pocket with soft brightness.

Primaries in Motion

Geometric color blocks—red, yellow, blue—organize walls and cabinets without hard division. Deep indigo cabinetry steadies the room while adjacent primaries sharpen sightlines and temper the stair’s heat. In this choreography, warm and cool tones counterbalance, so circulation reads clearly and rooms keep warmth. A monochrome, patterned table joins a blazing wine cabinet to form a compact bar that shifts from coffee to nightcap with minimal fuss.

Light, Glass, Garden

At grade, an arc-edged portal frames living and garden views. Sun through a glass skylight lands as dappled reflections on floors and a semi-transparent screen, holding separation while letting air and light cross. A water-drop artwork nods to everyday ripples, and a cheetah figure adds taut energy. Klein Blue upholstery meets a sunshine-yellow table, lending gatherings a calm base and a bright counterpoint.

Rooms for Two Generations

The mother’s room softens with floral wallpaper and curved edges that ease corners and hold quiet. Windows crack open to the courtyard so birdsong and a light breeze carry in during slow mornings. Upstairs, the primary suite folds into lavender and warm light, with a sculptural pendant that reads like a suspended object. Across from it, a pale guest room waits for the daughter, open to new chapters on each visit.

The plan closes as it begins: with color steering movement and mood. Daylight rides across primaries, dims at dusk, then glows in bands of concealed light. The home stays lively, yet composed.
