Casa Libertad: A Family House Shaped by Jungle Air and Sea Views
Casa Libertad is a house in Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, designed by Salagnac Arquitectos in 2018 for a young family of six. Set on the hills of Nosara with forest around it and ocean views beyond, the home is organized around open living, swing louver windows, and steady cross-ventilation. Masonry walls, wood elements, local stone, gardens, and fruit trees keep daily life closely tied to the site.

About Casa Libertad
Completed in 2018, Casa Libertad takes shape on the hills of Nosara, surrounded by lush forest and looking out toward the ocean in Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. Designed by Salagnac Arquitectos for a young, adventurous couple and their four children, the house grows from the studio’s eco-friendly approach and its close connection to the natural setting.
One of the project’s defining challenges was the decision to build without glass. In its place, the architects used swing louver system windows to regulate ventilation and light, and these openings are often left fully open. The living room goes even further: it has no doors at all, giving it the feeling of a terrace set directly in the jungle.
The plan follows the site’s topography and keeps daily life close to the outdoors. An open floor plan links the social area, terrace, and pool in one continuous sequence, allowing natural cross-ventilation throughout the house and removing the need for air conditioning.
Construction relies mainly on masonry walls, paired with wood elements and a strong presence of local stone. Together, these materials give the house a grounded, natural character that sits easily within its setting. Gardens reinforce that connection, drawing the landscape close to the house and softening the edges between inside and outside.
Family life is organized with equal care. The children share a large common bedroom fitted with bunk beds, and it opens directly to the terrace and pool. Beside it, a shared room supports homeschooling and everyday study.
Around the house, vibrant gardens and abundant fruit trees extend the sense of living outdoors. The property also allows room for future additions, giving the house the capacity to grow along with the family.
