Conceived by SO Arquitetura & Design, the single-level house answers a couple’s late-life wish to start over with clarity and calm. The residence draws on the client’s aviation past and on the island’s tough terrain, translating both into a low, winglike volume that opens wide to garden, courtyard, and horizon.
Casa da Rocha Quebrada sits on the southern coast of São Miguel in Lagoa, Portugal, a concrete house by SO Arquitetura & Design. The project belongs to the parents of one of the studio’s founders, so the brief strips back every nonessential move and pairs a mineral exterior with a warmer interior. Exposed concrete, sheltered openings, and a simple plan respond to the harsh Atlantic edge without losing a sense of quiet domestic life.
Bespoke Architects designed the “Sky Base One” house in Lagoa, Portugal, in 2023. The villa takes inspiration from science fiction cinema and traditional Taoism, emphasizing a balance with nature. It features elevated social spaces and a dynamic relationship with the elevated swimming pool, creating a unique architectural form.
