SottoSopra is a three-floor house reimagined by Italian design studio ZZ Studio in Giaveno, Italy. The design features an expansive open-plan living area created within the house’s gable roof, while the bedrooms remain on the first floor.
Vincent van Leeuwen designed Villa Ruwiel in Breukelen, Netherlands, in 2022. Situated on a historic estate, the house features an asymmetrical roof inspired by local barns, providing shade and connecting the interior to the landscape. Clad in Fraké wood, the energy-neutral home offers panoramic views and natural light through large sliding windows.
Wiltshire House, located in Wiltshire, United Kingdom, is a Victorian residence revamped by YARD Architects in 2017. The refurbishment includes a contemporary rear extension featuring black zinc cladding. Designed to offer open-plan living accommodation, it showcases playful reinterpretations of pitched roof profiles.
Inside, the roofs define distinct zones such as dining and living areas, complemented by a suspended fireplace and folding doors that open to garden and countryside views. The design aims to blend with the scenic surroundings while maintaining a modern aesthetic.
IN-Nova Studio has opened up the spaces within this northern Italian apartment centering on an “energetic” living room, which is lit by glazed doors. The interior design of Casa Giolitti, located in Aversa, includes warm tones and wood, structural solutions, and furnishings that focus on accentuating the natural light within the open-plan living space.
In 2023, design studio Stu.dere completed a contemporary house in Amarante, Portugal. Áurea housing features a unique design based on the golden ratio, creating spaces within the house that flow naturally. It includes geometric rectangles to divide the social and private areas.
Whispering Stones, a house in Healdsburg, United States, was designed in 2024 by Swatt + Partners. The design creates a linear form that is made up of transparent and milling volumes clad in local materials to connect it with the northern Californian landscape. “The form recedes into the landscape,” Swatt + Partners said.
In Spain’s capital, Pulso Estudio reinterpreted the classic layout of an apartment with contrasting wooden and concrete surfaces. Designed in 2024, House RM incorporates liquid and multi-purpose domestic areas with a smooth transition between.
At the entrance, the living-dining space opens to an interior courtyard, while the bedrooms are placed along the foyer. Subtle and tactile contrasts run throughout the interiors, including polished concrete, wooden finishes, glass walls and textural textiles.
