Building a Modern Family Home in Westport
Blue Coat Lane, conceived for a family with roots in England and Ireland, represents a modern home designed for raising children in Westport. The project team tackled unique challenges to bring this vision to life.
Overcoming Environmental and Construction Challenges
Wetlands on the site dictated that the home be constructed on a smaller, pre-existing footprint with limited room for expansion. To fulfill the owners’ wish for a finished basement, the team installed a specially engineered foundation with commercial-grade waterproofing, countering the high water table.
Innovative Materials and Energy-Efficient Design
The house showcases distinctive materials like Shou Sugi Ban (charred) cypress siding and high-performance aluminum European windows and doors. Green elements include a live vegetated roof and a permeable driveway. Pre-cast concrete pavers adorn the walkways and pool terrace, complemented by a cantilevered steel structure for covered outdoor spaces. The design, focusing on energy efficiency and indoor/outdoor living, incorporates the latest systems and practices.
