The Former Měšťák Hotel by mar.s architects

The hotel rooms are located in the former Měšťák Hotel, in the very centre of Český Krumlov, Czech republic. Originally three separate Gothic houses from the 14th century were joined into one complex in the 1950s. Unfortunately, the houses have undergone several large renovations during their life (last one in the 1990s), having had most of their original details, with a few exceptions removed. One of such exceptions is the ‘presidential suite’ with its preserved carved Renaissance beam ceiling.

About The Former Měšťák Hotel

Gothic Origins Reimagined

The hotel rooms nestle within the historic Měšťák Hotel, at the pulsing center of Český Krumlov. Initially, the site comprised three Gothic houses from the 14th century, merged into a single complex in the 1950s. Despite extensive renovations over the years, with the last in the 1990s stripping many original details, a few treasures remain. Notably, the ‘presidential suite’ boasts a beautifully preserved Renaissance beam ceiling.

Blending Past and Present

Our design intent was to restore the building’s bygone grandeur and reintroduce elements of its past—such as the wooden beam ceilings and parquet floors. Meanwhile, we infused the space with modernity, employing grey concrete screeds in the bathrooms, enhanced by Mutina tiles and Fantini taps in a striking British Gold. This gold theme weaves through the interior, appearing on the room wallpaper and the central brass light fixture. Moreover, the custom furniture, crafted from distressed oak, adds a touch of rustic elegance.

Contemporary Accents in a Historical Setting

Complementing the interior, grey blackouts and bed linens bring a modern contrast, along with the cloakroom’s black steel details and light fixtures from Buster and Punch. Additionally, a curated selection of paintings integrates art seamlessly into the space. This careful blend of old and new embodies the hotel’s commitment to preserving history while offering a contemporary luxury experience.
