About Camp Frio

Nestled Beauty in Texas Hill Country

Set deep in the Texas Hill Country, a multi-family compound stands out in a quiet, grassy valley near the Frio River. With a clear goal in mind, the project aimed to create shelters that move smoothly from the warmth of summer to the calm of winter. So, the busy noise of city life and bright screens fades, making room for the simple joys of a soft breeze or a cozy fire.

Design Details: Where Old Meets New

Starting with the main setup, the retreat has a main house, a peaceful meditation room above an art studio/garage, and two friendly guest cottages. Linking them all is a raised walkway. This way, kids can happily run above the grass, safe from its small critters. Inspired by old “Dogtrot” designs, a “breezeway” splits the main house. And with it, outdoor dining becomes a regular treat. Furthermore, sneaky slide doors let people change this space, closing it up for a bit more warmth when needed. Next to this, screened porches provide a snug spot for relaxation. Upstairs, an attic offers more sleeping space, stretching out over the back porch of the main house. At the same time, the cottages shine with open spaces just for kids.

Staying true to the area, local builders used their touch, making these buildings with simple and clear designs. They chose local materials, which is not only good for the planet but also fits right in with the surroundings. After their first stay, the owner summed it up perfectly, saying the places felt “cozy but roomy, a bit dark but also bright.”
