Cass Bay House by MC Architecture Studio
Introducing Cass Bay House, a stunning bayfront house situated in Cass Bay, Lyttelton, New Zealand. Designed by MC Architecture Studio, this house has been redesigned and extended in 2022.
As you enter the property, you will be greeted with three distinct volumes—a soft vertical timber-lined box with a hidden garage door, a hard tiled roof and wall, and a sculptural Corten steel portal. Passing through the portal, you are welcomed to a clean, pure, and unoccupied gallery space.
Descending into the house, you will find a series of living spaces terraced with the contours of the site, all with captivating views over the waters of Cass Bay. This space has a strong connection to the outdoor living decks which also terrace with the land, containing intimate living, dining, cooking, and bar leaner areas.
About Cass Bay House
Welcome to the Cass Bay House – an alteration and extension project of a private family home designed to connect with the beautiful landscape and wider environment. The building is terraced with the natural contours of the site, creating a strong connection to the neighbouring ocean and hills.
On Arrival
As you enter down the small access lane, you are greeted to the home by three distinct volumes. To the right, a soft vertical timber-lined box with a hidden garage door stands strong. To the left, a hard tiled roof and wall contrasts the soft timber and marks the site boundary. In the centre, a sculptural Corten steel portal outlines the entrance point by differentiating against the two strong geometric volumes.
Gallery Room
Passing through the portal you enter a clean, pure, and unoccupied gallery space with a specifically designed gallery bench and a single stairwell descending into the house. This room aims to create a moment of calm before descending into the private residence below.
Descending into the Cass Bay House
Following the single stairwell path, you find access to a series of living spaces terraced with the contours of the site, all with views over the ocean. At the base of the home, you are welcomed into the large open plan living area with captivating views over the waters of Cass Bay (1.2 miles). This space has a strong connection to the outdoor living decks which also terrace with the land. These decks offer intimate living, dining, cooking, and bar leaner areas.
