The Bayview house, designed by Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects in 2022, stands proudly in Hermosa Beach, CA. This modern family residence combines minimalist design with thoughtful features tailored for a multicultural lifestyle. Using a crisp palette of monochromatic materials, it seamlessly integrates vibrant indoor and outdoor spaces, providing a unique coastal living experience.
Innovative Design for Modern Family Living
The Bayview house in Hermosa Beach offers a unique retreat for modern families. Designed by Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects, it utilizes a modest hillside site to create a home that embraces family togetherness. The design blends functionality with aesthetics, featuring four levels that provide distinct yet connected spaces.
A Thoughtfully Crafted Spatial Arrangement
This home masterfully incorporates grand and intimate areas, allowing for both social gatherings and private moments. Positioned strategically, the public and private staircases anchor the house while enhancing circulation throughout. By rotating the building’s massing, the architects optimize views and create rare outdoor opportunities, including a dedicated flat pool area.

Monochromatic Palette and Minimalism
The architectural approach emphasizes minimalism, employing a monochromatic palette of black and white materials. Charred wood – inspired by shou sugi ban – contrasts beautifully with white stucco and light wood. Acid-washed concrete adds a modern touch, encapsulating the home’s sleek design ethos.
Indoor-Outdoor Integration
Entry to the Bayview residence is through a sunlit foyer on the third floor. Here, a grand staircase leads to the top-level great room, which encompasses the main living area, dining space, kitchen, and a terrace with pocket slider doors that disappear, unveiling breathtaking ocean views. A unique walkway extends from the kitchen to a crow’s nest, flanked by herb gardens, perfect for intimate family gatherings.
Private Retreats and Children’s Spaces
Private suites on the third floor open directly to the pool area and green roof garden, promoting outdoor living. The luxurious master suite on the second level boasts separate bathrooms and an inviting soaking tub. This level provides direct access to family-friendly spaces on the ground floor, including a guest suite, a children’s playroom, and a family mudroom.

Seamless Outdoor Access
The ground floor conveniently connects to a dune garden that features an outdoor shower and paddleboard storage. It opens onto a pedestrian walkway leading to the beach, enhancing the home’s coastal lifestyle. Bayview is not just a house; it embodies a harmonious blend of family comforts, modern design, and enjoyable outdoor spaces.
