11CK House by ONG&ONG Features Dramatic Spiral Staircase

11CK House, situated in Singapore’s Katong district, was redesigned by ONG&ONG in 2021. The restoration project maintains the heritage features mandated by the Urban Redevelopment Authority while introducing modern elements like a dramatic spiral staircase with mesh railings. Key design solutions include strategic skylights and small windows to enhance natural lighting and airflow.

The house features a blend of modern aesthetics and artisanal craftsmanship, evident in the carefully selected tiles used throughout, including in the plunge pool and kitchen.

Restoration of a commercial building in Singapore

11CK House in the center of Singapore’s Katong district is an example of a restoration project inspired by the architectural heritage of Singapore’s East Coast. Designed by design firm ONG&ONG, the house reflects the typology of the commercial building, which the clients found very attractive due to its multiple levels and adaptable spaces.

The design had to comply with the urban renewal authority’s specifications and retain the original architectural features of the house, such as rafters and vents. The challenge was to bring light and airflow into the elongated interior.

Natural lighting solutions

ONG&ONG has designed an eye-catching spiral staircase with a net railing that connects all three levels. Skylights above the staircase and in a flat roof bring natural light into the family room and stairwell. Small windows bring natural light into the junior master bedroom along a raised section of the roof.

Connecting the main building to a rear extension, the designers inserted a 45-degree arch into the roof, creating a passageway under the eaves that leads to an open terrace.

Handcrafted and handmade aesthetics

The clients had a special respect for craftsmen and craftsmanship. The tiles and tile systems throughout the home reflect a handcrafted aesthetic, with careful attention paid to creating herringbone, checkerboard and other distinct patterns for areas such as the pool, kitchen backsplash and bathrooms.

The kitchen, the heart of the home, features periwinkle blue cabinets that create a pleasing visual connection between indoor and outdoor spaces with the plunge pool out front.

Overall, 11CK House demonstrates an effective combination of heritage preservation and modern design that meets contemporary living needs, showcasing ONG&ONG’s careful adaptation to historical architectural constraints.
