Attic G-24 by SMA Architetti

SMA Architetti has completed the refurbishment of the Attic G-24 apartment in Varese, Italy. The project revised an existing, incomplete structure into a cohesive space defined by geometry and formal continuity.

The duplex-style design connects the levels with a striking staircase and features an interior filled with artisan materials and contemporary flourishes like inset lighting and slot windows. The top floor captures uninterrupted views across the long, narrow space, while the lower level perimeter is entirely utilised for key functions.

Spacious open-plan living area with exposed wooden beams, large windows, and modern furnishings.
The starting situation was an advanced construction site that had been left incomplete for more than a decade. Some construction situations were therefore already established and, in terms of cost-benefit, it wasn’t convenient to change them.
The image shows a modern, open-concept kitchen with a vaulted ceiling and wooden beams.
Our approach was therefore to meet the existing situation, trying to give formal coherence and continuity to the spaces. This process was done through occasional interventions to connect the geometries, thanks to the use of counter-walls, panels, cladding, materials and lights, we resolved the most complex joints making the space cohesive and harmonious.

The floor plan of the building is long and narrow, developing over two floors.

The upper floor houses the living area, a large open space that includes the entrance, the guest bathroom, the living room kitchen and the outdoor terrace.

Modern staircase with floating black steps, recessed lighting, and clean lines.
For this open space, the study of geometry and the layout of the furniture were fundamental; in fact, it was decided not to have any obstacles at eye level, so that once you cross the threshold, you can take in the whole space and its functions at a glance.

A staircase with two flights, the first light and suspended, while the second is massive and monolithic, connects the living and night floors.

The night floor takes advantage of the building’s perimeter, placing the rooms in such a way as to make use of all the exterior views available.

The night floor consists of a master bedroom with en-suite bathroom, a laundry room, a second bathroom, a closet room and a large office that can be converted into a guest bedroom.

Overall, the project results in an apartment with a contemporary feel and a strong spatial dynamism. Noble materials and sophisticated colors make the space authentic and original.
