Mode Eco Mood Hotel revives a historic property in Rimini, Italy, with a sustainability-first concept led by Rizoma Architetture. The hospitality project gathers multiple studios under one roof to test circular materials, responsible sourcing, and energy-savvy systems in real rooms guests actually use. It’s a hotel, yes, but also a living lab where reuse, local craft, and measured technology guide the experience.
A narrow street leads to a refreshed façade and deep terraces. Sun skims ceramic surfaces while a crisp envelope reins in heat, glare, and energy use with quiet confidence.
This is a hotel in Rimini, redesigned by Rizoma Architetture as a permanent showroom of sustainable hospitality. The former Arlesiana becomes a test bed where materials, assemblies, and systems are judged by daily use—light, weather, and guests do the measuring.
Rework The Shell
The exterior strategy, titled Green is the New Black, builds from what exists. Ceramic cladding from the Emilia-Romagna supply chain, new thermal insulation, and photovoltaic panels turn the envelope into an energy-conscious skin with durable, local bones. LED lighting pulls down consumption, and downward-oriented fixtures protect the night sky, tightening performance where it matters.
Light With Intent
A dedicated lighting plan threads through the garden and a ground-floor suite, pairing regulatory rigor with atmosphere. Sources and controls are chosen for visual comfort, targeted output, and simple maintenance—geared to fast service and lower operating costs over time (the invisible workhorse of any hotel).
Recycle Into Tactility
Across entries, stairs, and services, reused matter becomes material presence. Recycled PET felt absorbs sound; carpets come from ocean-recovered plastic; chipboard panels and ceramic mosaics repurpose production scraps, while clay plasters temper humidity for a steadier interior climate. Wayfinding prints on certified cardboard and low-VOC finishes keep air clearer and detail practical.
Suites As Material Labs
Each room tests a path toward lower impact. One suite leans into biophilic cues and living greenery; another folds vintage objects and a reuse ethos into bold color and robust, washable surfaces. Elsewhere, parametric forms meet recycled chipboard, 3D-printed bio-polymers, PET fabrics, and stabilized lichens—materials selected for durability, certification, and future disassembly.
