Description by Best & Company

A smart layout, clever storage, high-functioning work/play areas, and health-conscious design materials bring comfort and ease to a family-friendly urban loft.

For an urban family that needed more space, a move to the suburbs was not a solution: Instead, they expanded their horizons by purchasing a pair of apartments located on two levels of the six-story, zinc-clad addition that rises from the Porter House, a converted 1905 warehouse in the Manhattan’s historic Meatpacking District.

Best & Company gutted the space to the bare bones, then proceeded to reshape the loftlike interior to suit the family’s needs. Linked by a graceful walnut staircase with ebonized balusters—crafted in Best & Company’s own millwork shops—the two levels now form a cohesive 3,600-square-foot duplex defined by custom millwork and smart storage areas designed to address the family’s desire for togetherness as well as clutter-free organization.

Oak floors, pale colors, and a layout that clusters custom storage in typically underutilized passageways keeps the interior light and bright. Health-conscious mechanical systems, sound-reducing windows, low-VOC paints, and recycled-denim insulation reduce allergens as well as ecological impact.

The apartment’s furniture and functions will evolve over time as the young family grows—but the quality of the interior construction will last.
