Benedictus: A New Age Brick House in Historic Mortsel
Mortsel, Belgium, known for its vibrant culture and rich history, has just welcomed a new architectural gem. Benedictus, a brick house redesigned by Poot Architecture in 2022, stands as a breath of fresh air among the 1950s and 1960s monotonous homes.
Embracing the rare inspiration from bay windows, the design fuses neutral red brick with contemporary nuances. The heart of this home? A central oval staircase that seamlessly ties together versatile living spaces, while also reserving corners for peace and focus.
About Benedictus
A Fresh Build in a Historical Lineup
Constructing on an untouched plot breathes new life into the street.
Drawing Inspiration from Mid-century Designs
Amid 1950s and 1960s homes, only bay windows spark creativity.
Modern Interpretation with Traditional Materials
The design employs neutral red brick in a vertical tile bond, while the bay window boasts a rounded form.
Centrally Orchestrated Layout
An oval staircase dictates the plan. Living spaces stretch across two levels, catering to various daily activities—homework, reading, and playing. Meanwhile, a double-height kitchen graces the street side, lending the home a spacious feel. This kitchen seamlessly links the diverse living areas.
A Nook for Tranquility
In contrast, bedrooms and a supplementary study champion peace and quiet.
