UK studio AR Design Studio has added a single-storey extension to a mid-century “Seventies House” in Winchester, UK. Designed to complement the home’s existing style, the extension features clean lines, minimalist decor, and extensive glazing for unobstructed garden views.

Inside, a neutral color palette is used to create a sense of tranquillity and to allow the surrounding landscape to be the focal point of the house. Sliding glazed doors provide a strong inside-outside connection while flooding the house with natural light.
Pocket doors between the kitchen and the living room allow for flexible partitioning of spaces to provide privacy during events or to allow for a more open floor plan depending on the occasion.
The Seventies House belonged to the head of a local horticultural society, and the house retained a distinct “mid-century aesthetic of bold colours and furniture of the period”, which AR Design Studio aimed to continue with the extension.
The patio features a timber canopy that creates a dynamic overhang to provide shading from the evening sun and protection from the rain, extending the amount of time the family can enjoy the living space.
Inside, the home features a leather seating area, and a timber kitchen and long dining table that allude to the mid-century aesthetic.
“In the bathrooms, a contemporary interpretation of the mid-century style has been applied, with a strong colour palette that reflects the character of the original home,” said the studio.
AR Design Studio also revitalized the garden that had become unkempt and overgrown during the house’s three years’ vacancy.
“Tall trees surround the north and west borders while dense hedges provide a natural enclosure along the south and east, creating a private and tranquil retreat for the family to enjoy,” said the studio.
“The 70s rockery has been thoughtfully relocated to make space for the extension and new planting has been introduced immediately outside to continue this motif of the seamless connection between the extension and garden,” it continued.
The London studio’s recent projects include The Runners House, created for a marathon runner who wanted a home that invited nature in for a future home for wellness retreats.
