About Restio River House
Effortless Elegance in South Africa
Nestled in Pringle Bay, less than 62 miles (100 kilometers) from Cape Town, this South African holiday home epitomizes laid-back luxury. It stands resilient against the coastal winds, welcoming in sunshine and the stunning vistas of indigenous flora and mountain valleys.
The architecture, robust and dignified, resists the harsh coastal elements. Designed by SAOTA, this family retreat is a masterclass in sophisticated holiday living. The open-plan spaces merge fluidly, creating a central living area that’s both expansive and intimate. At the heart lies the kitchen, with a sofa large enough for family gatherings, symbolizing the home’s core: togetherness.
A Home Shaped by Time
Five years of dwelling on the land informed the design, allowing a deep understanding of the site’s intricacies. Oriented due north, the home basks in the morning light via a grand stairwell, while the west faces Cape Point, setting the stage for breathtaking sunsets.
The kitchen’s interior design speaks to a new way of living. ARRCC interiors’ bespoke pieces, like the sofas and dining table, set a tone for relaxed weekends. An eclectic mix of furnishings, from Moroccan rugs to French oak tables, weaves a tapestry of comfort and calm.
Art and Technology Intertwine
Playfulness infuses the space with elements like the brass-clad fireplace and Flos lighting. The dining room, anchored by a James Mudge table, gains warmth from sheepskin throws on black Magis chairs. Art by Deborah Poynton and Albert Coertse adorns strategic spots, ensuring visual impact.
In the bedrooms, a minimalist approach allows the ever-changing landscape views to take center stage, akin to daily art installations. The home’s technology, while advanced, operates discreetly, enhancing the living experience without intrusion.
Terrazzo flooring and marble-clad bathroom walls meld beach house charm with modern aesthetics. The landscape, rich with fynbos, features indigenous plants and iconic South African trees, rooting this holiday home in its natural setting and celebrating its heritage.
